Many know that there are 12 million AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. Few realize that most of these children are looked after by their grandmothers. We want to let it be known. Check out the film clip below, and if you have time, see the whole film (24 minutes) here: blip.tv/file/327912/
Media For Development International – Tanzania, (MFDI-Tz) believes a dramatic feature film can position this highly emotional issue in the public arena in a way that inspires individuals and communities to find meaningful responses to this enormous social problem.
While the issues are complex, our approach is a simple, emotionally charged story celebrating the unconditional love of a grandmother for her six-year-old orphaned grandson in their struggle to survive.
Their environment is a hostile one, plagued with the fear, stigma and misconceptions associated with those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.
But ours is a story of strength and hope.
The purpose of this film is to strike a nerve in communities across Tanzania, Africa and beyond that moves us all to address this growing problem with a level of compassion and concern that will make a difference.
The film will create wider awareness, empathy, respect and support for elderly people, especially women, engaged in the enormous challenges and responsibilities of care giving, at a time they should rightfully be resting on their laurels.
The film will create public dialoge and debate around the challenges facing elderly caregivers, with a purpose of finding sustainable and lasting solutions to this problem.
Media for Development has produced and distributed numerous projects to this effect in the past, that have reached hundreds of millions of people across Africa.
